Weekends Plans

Finally no frost in the 5 day forecast. How are we celebrating??? Planting of course. The sign of true confidence the season is well under way. We'll make a decision about csa start date at the beginning of June-it's between the 2nd & 3rd week....if I had my guess it would be the 3rd week.... Saturday I'm in Royal Oak at the Farmers Market along with so many other great growers. Flowers, vegetable plants, produce and so much more available there. Sunday I'm at the Plum Market in Ann Arbor. It's an opportunity to meet our supporters on that side of town. Totally new to Ann Arbor, so come out and say hi if you get the chance. So happy the weather seems to be on our side. I will not be finished sending out emails for the remainder of csa members past Tuesdays until the 6/3. This week has been swamped with frost duty and planting plans.....so sorry for the delay, but I promise to get the info out to members before the season starts. It won't be long before we're in the full swing of things! Eat & Be Well, Michelle Lutz Maple Creek Farm 810 387 4365 http://www.maplecreekfarm.com/

Memorial Day Update

We're still in a "holding" pattern.Weather.gov has us with frost Tuesday & Wednesday night. Yesterday morning we were down to freezing. What we wanted to plant today now needs to wait until Thursday. That's ok, there's plenty of other things to do.
I  have started to work on the lists and emails so please know if you've signed up for the 08 season you'll have all your info by the end of this week (5/31).
We still haven't made a decision about start date. Danny wants to wait to make a decision towards the end of this week-he wants to start when the strawberries will be ready and that's just a hard thing to predict now. So please be patient with us a little longer and we'll make a decision soon.

What's going on at the farm?

It's been a rather cold week, and we were really stuck just keeping to planting cold tolerant crops as tonight will be clear and there is sure to frost tomorrow morning as there have been several lately....but starting tomorrow we will begin planting some warmer loving crops like zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and then soon melons & winter squashes, and pie pumpkins will go in.

So far so good. The weather hasn't been great, but I'm sure that's no surprise to you. What does that mean to our csa members who are waiting for their first share-we're going to start share distribution either the 2nd or 3rd week of June. This next week will decide that. If the weather is excellent and we get the right amount of rain, then the 2nd week isn't impossible, but if we miss rain and next week is just ok weather than realistically it's going to be the 3rd week, which by the way will take us until the last week of October. Oh, what an experience we will have between now & then!!

So I'll be in touch-today we planted Brussels sprouts and more green cabbage and we finished the rest of the leeks (yes, we have to think about that fall harvest stuff now). We harvested some lettuce for Royal Oak Farmers Market tomorrow and loaded some plants into the truck. No holiday here on Monday-we're planting.

Strawberries are in full blossom, small berries are starting to form. Oh, I can't wait....

Mid May Farm Update

Hello Everyone!

It's Monday 5/19 and brrr....it's a chilly start to the day. What's on the agenda today? Finish seeding cantaloupes and preparing more raised beds to plant more crop. Right now only cold hardy crops can be in the ground. It's a little too early for us to really finish up the majority of the planting and we will be busy everyday over the next month planting.

What do we have in the ground now? Broccoli, cabbage, swiss chard, kale, collards, onions, garlic, lettuce, peas, beets, arugula, radishes, and chinese cabbage.
As soon as the weather warms up we're ready to plant zucchini & summer squash and lots of other good food!

When are we going to start delivering csa shares? That's a good question. If I had to take a guess today I would say the 2nd week in June, but we still need a couple more weeks before confirming that.

If you have signed up for the 2008 csa season you will be receiving you pick up information by email this week.

Keep checking for updates!
